The most telling patent is the one Apple hasn't filed: on-device, speech-only input with zero visual UI. Until that exists, Apple hasn't actually decided whether Glasses is a screen wearing a voice, or a voice wearing a screen — and that decision, not the silicon, is what determines who they're really competing with.
Offloading compute to the iPhone isn't just an engineering shortcut — it's a business-model decision. It means Glasses can never be sold as a standalone product; it has to be sold as an accessory. That locks the whole category into iPhone upgrade cycles and Apple's existing installed base, which is a very different go-to-market than Meta or Google are running.
Whether Apple starts filing trademarks or store-listing language that treats Glasses as its own product category rather than an iPhone peripheral. That filing — not a keynote — is the real signal of whether the tether is temporary or permanent.

The Five Patents
Each patent below solves one specific problem that has killed every previous attempt at consumer AR glasses: comfort, vision, input, or compute. Taken in sequence, they describe a deliberate product.
Patent 01 · The Nose Bridge Light Engine
Apple moves the light engine — the part that projects images into your eye — off the temple arm and onto the nose bridge, using micro-LED panels and scanning mirrors. Temple-mounted engines make glasses unbalanced and hot on one ear; centring it fixes weight and heat and allows a far thinner arm. This is the decision that lets Apple Glasses look like glasses and stay comfortable all day — the comfort failure that killed Google Glass.

Patent 02 · Real-Time Prescription Adjustment
A fluid-filled lens that inflates and deflates to change its prescription in real time, measured continuously against the wearer's eye. Every AR product today needs prescription inserts or contacts; this removes both. About 75 percent of adults over 40 need correction, so this is what turns AR glasses from a niche device into a mass-market one, and it only makes sense if Apple is designing for all-day wear.
When it appears — filed November 2024 (US-2025-0067234). Hard to manufacture at scale; likely a second-generation feature, 2028 to 2029.
Patent 03 · Facial Gesture Control
Sensors in the frame read jaw movements, eyebrow raises, and deliberate blinks as commands, with on-device machine learning separating intent from involuntary motion. Every other input method — buttons, touchpads, controllers — makes it obvious you are using a device, which is exactly what got Google Glass rejected. Facial control is invisible to bystanders, and it signals there is no companion controller. The face is the controller.

Patent 04 · Eye-Gaze Navigation
Eye-tracking turns your gaze into the cursor, with zones mapped to the lens corners and pupil dilation as a secondary interest signal. It is the most natural input for a heads-up display, since your eyes are already on what you want. Paired with facial gestures, it completes a hands-free, socially invisible input system — the same eye-plus-confirm model praised on Vision Pro, now without a pinch.
When it appears — filed August 2024 (US-2024-0345621). A day-one N50 feature, given Apple's Vision Pro eye-tracking.
Patent 05 · iPhone as the Compute Source
AR is computed on the iPhone and projected through the glasses over a sub-1ms ultra-wideband link; the glasses hold only optics and sensors. A chip strong enough to render AR inside a frame would create heat, battery, and weight problems with no solution. Offloading to the iPhone solves all three at once and makes the glasses an iPhone peripheral, like AirPods — which also locks them into Apple's ecosystem.

What the Five Add Up To
Read together, the patents describe a product Apple has been designing with intent for at least three years.
Looks like glasses — the nose bridge engine and thin arm mean they read as normal eyewear, not hardware.
Works for everyone — the fluid lens removes the prescription barrier for the 75 percent who need correction.
Invisible to operate — facial gestures and eye-gaze mean nobody around you knows you are interacting.
All-day wearable — iPhone-tethered compute solves heat, battery, and weight together.
Codename N50. Target early 2027. The announcement hasn't happened. The product already has.
Three Things That Decide It
If Apple ships, these are the three tests the product has to pass. Each maps directly to a patent above.
01 — Comfort. The nose bridge engine and iPhone compute exist to make the glasses light and cool enough for all-day wear. If they ship heavy or hot, the thesis breaks.
02 — Social invisibility. Facial and eye-gaze input only matter because any visible interaction triggers the Google Glass rejection. Watch whether the interaction truly disappears.
03 — Mass market. The fluid lens is what makes this everyone's device, not a niche one. If it slips to gen two, the first generation stays narrower than the patents imply.
The Honest Part
Patents are intent, not commitment. Apple files thousands and ships a fraction. The dates here are filing dates, and the 2027 target is inferred from Apple's historical patent-to-product lag, not announced. At least one of these, the fluid lens, is most likely a second-generation feature. Read this as a well-sourced map of where Apple is heading, not a product announcement. The filings tell you the shape of the product. They do not promise the date.
